Surface recycling, or hot in-place recycling, is an efficient process used to repair and rehabilitate deteriorated bituminous streets and highways on-site with specialized equipment. This process may be performed as either a one- or two-phase operation. In the single-phase method, new asphalt is laid immediately behind the recycled asphalt. The two-phase operation allows for the delayed laydown of asphalt mat (or other surface cover) which may be placed on the recycled mat hours, days, or weeks later. This recycling discipline provides a low-cost maintenance strategy for removing cracks, ruts, and low areas by utilizing existing asphalt pavement for in-place rehabilitation. Flexibility and quality are restored to the asphalt material and the pavement is prepared for other surface treatments. Surface recycling allows the available dollars to be spread over more square yards of pavement maintenance areas. Increased costs of maintenance work make this process a very desirable alternative in a roadway repair program. Highly efficient equipment and improved methods of pavement rehabilitation allow for a recycled street to be completed and opened to traffic with only a few hours delay. Although highly visible to the public, the process is fast and presents only minor inconvenience to motorists. |
How it Works

| 1. Dustrol's surface recycle process begins with two or more custom-made, propane-fueled preheaters. | 2. The last heater in the train is equipped with hydraulically controlled, spring-loaded scarifiers. |

| 3. The scarifiers loosen the reheated asphalt pavement in preparation for reprocessing. Depths of 25mm to 40 mm are achieved under normal conditions. | 4. The asphalt recycle paver follows up the scarification process and adds the rejuvenation oil prior to the milling and mixing process. The addition of oil is controlled by a positive displacement pump which is calibrated to the ground speed of the paver. |

| 5. After the addition of rejuvenator the material is milled, mixed, and redistributed uniformly prior to screeding. The milling process can obtain additional depths of treatment while leaving a textured surface for increased bonding of the recycled asphalt. | 6. The reprocessed asphalt is then compacted using conventional rolling methods. |

| 7. Dustrol's process allows traffic to pass the surface recycling operation with a minimal disruption. | 8. After completion of the entire roadway, many of the surface defects have been eliminated. The road is then ready for a final riding surface to be applied. This can be done immediately or after a delayed period. |
SUMMARY
By utilizing our process you can expect the following benefits:
- less impact on the environment
- reduced cost allows more miles of roadway to be maintained.
- Minimal impact on traffic.
- Process is independent of other processes, allowing a more flexible schedule
